Apple have also done us a nice favour in putting it to the top of New & Noteworthy for Entertainment! Woop!

Technically, the app is built using HTML5 using the Sencha Touch and PhoneGap frameworks, pulling in content via the Vimeo API. It was built as a showcase for what’s possible on hybrid apps. Oh, and did we mention we’ve just submitted an update for it to work on iPhone too? Yeh baby…

It’s not every day you’re happy to find pocket lint. But when Pocket Lint finds you and your app, and votes it App of the Day, you’ve got to take your hands out of your trousers and applaud.

In a glowing review, the Lintmeisters state that:

“This iPad-specific app is quite simply stunning, in both application and presentation.”

Followed by:

“What strikes Tesco’s recipes apart from most, though, is that every ingredient needed is listed and can be immediately added to your shopping basket. Neat.”

Thanks guys. To top it all off, they compare the existing online shopping experience to the one we created, and so I quote:

“And it is here that the app excels, in the shopping duty itself. We’ve often found online grocery shopping a bit cumbersome to do on a PC or Mac; the browser doesn’t refresh fast enough, or the pictures don’t load correctly, and there’s far too much scrolling with a mouse to be done…On the iPad, though, it is as simple as swipes of the finger to browse through items, each of which is presented as a healthily-sized, bright and colourful icon. You can filter for offers at the touch of one top tab, and you can go back and forth through the different sections as easily as navigating through the iPad’s main menu.”

To celebrate the launch of the new barcode scanning facility on the ribot-created iPhone app, Tesco have launched a fun ad for early 2011.

It’s certainly been popular with viewers, and really hammers home what we wanted to do when we made the app: to create real behavioural change amongst a wide number of people.

The newly-released Tesco Recipes on iPad, designed by ribot, is enjoying something of a post-festive treat. We’ve now reached the Top 5 free apps on the Store, and are #1 in the Lifestyle category.

On another positive note, Tesco Groceries for iPhone, also designed as well as developed by ribot, is #1 in Lifestyle for smaller devices.

All good news then. So never mind the crackers, 2011 is starting off with a much larger bang!

Christmas has come a day or two early this year for those that have been yearning for a source of inspiration whilst grocery shopping on their iPads… Well, we’re happy to announce that Tesco Recipes has been launched!

Bringing together the mouth-watering and inspiring photos and recipes from Tesco Real Food and the simplicity and utility of the Tesco grocery shopping experience, you can now purchase all the ingredients for your favourite recipes with ease.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work by Rob, Jerome and Ian – the designers at ribot, Neil and Lei – the very talented ‘developers’ and of course Becky and co. from the Tesco team!

‘Twas 2 weeks before Christmas, when all through the house Not a ribot remained stirring, not even Mark Kirby. The plates were put on the table with care, In the hope that some hot grub soon would be there.

The ribots were nestled all snug with ‘iPad, While visions of LightBike 2 made them glad. And antony in his apron, and Jerome with his punch, Had just helped prepare a festive dinner-come-lunch.

“Now Robert! now, Jason! now, Tara and Hart! On, Breckler! On, Jerome! On, Tony – don’t you start! To the top of the dials! to beyond city wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

And they sprang to a sleigh, they all gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard them exclaim, as they drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

We’ve been working very closely with TouchType – the team behind the best Android keyboard around: SwiftKey.

And today sees the release of the ribot-designed HD skin, along with a host of other advancements, including further language support. The overwhelmingly-positive feedback has been stacking up on the marketplace this morning:

When Riddle & Finns friend Phillip suggested that we go out on a boat early in the morning to gather up some fishies, take them back to the restaurant in the evening, learn how to prepare and fillet, and have a 5-course meal in the process, how could we say no?

Though the snow fell and the winds chilled our faces, we had great fun, and met a number of interesting characters. And the day was not without incident: Jerome and Jim traded stomach contents with the sea, Rob was found to be a natural with a rod, and we somehow caught an overly-greedy seagull!

After all the activity out at sea, a long slow evening under candlelight and in good company was in order. Oysters, Razor clams, bouillabaisse, mackerel sashimi, whiting (both caught by us) and some good ol’ champers were had.

The satisfaction of being involved throughout the entire process was more than just a novelty. Food took on a different meaning, and was that much more satisfying to eat! Highly recommended!

With the key inclusion of barcode scanning, customers are now able to quickly and conveniently add products like milk to their basket before putting their empties in the recycling bin.

Furthermore, those sneaky customers amongst you may wish to venture into competitors’ stores to scan and add products at potentially cheaper prices. We think that this new concept will work best for the more demand-elastic, higher value grocery products that aren’t deemed necessities, and therefore can be delivered a few days later without inconvenience.

Ribot have been invited to speak at Mobile App World, the all-singing, all-dancing two-day event that focuses on strategic thinking within the ever-expanding world of mobile applications.

We’ll be speaking about m-commerce, giving some inside thoughts on the iPhone, Nokia and Windows Phone experiences we’ve been creating for Tesco.

Other notable speakers include Russell Buckley from Google, Scott Seaborn from Ogilvy and Ilicco Elia from Reuters.

The event is at Vinopolis on the 19th-20th October.

We were very happy to see our new Tesco app demoed at yesterday’s Windows Phone 7 launch.

Oded Ran, Head of Windows Phone 7 Marketing, described the app as “beautiful…raising the benchmark of m-commerce”, adding that he was “very proud of the Tesco app”.

In fact, as the showcase app, it was the only third-party app featured, which was nice.

Tipped to be the Android event of the year, it’s great to both be involved with and speak at droidcon.

Antony will be speaking about the lessons learnt winning business for mobile design & development projects and how to succeed in the chaotic world of mobile.

Jerome will be focusing on ‘the mobile shopping experience of tomorrow, today’, with a heavy lean on the Tesco iPhone app recently launched by ribot, and the myriad design decisions that went into it.

When rising techno-darling of the mobile web world James Pearce got in contact about wanting to collaborate on making WordPress more mobile-friendly, we couldn’t turn down the opportunity. Since designing and releasing the pack, we’ve seen downloads break the 100k barrier – they currently stand at 103,018.

This is great news for little WordPress Mobile Pack, but stay tuned for lots of interesting developments in the near future.

Fundamentally, all we want to do at ribot is make peoples’ lives as simple as possible, and bring awareness of how much easier everyday things can be through good design. Looking at the feedback, i think we’ve achieved this objective.

It’s currently now 8th overall for all free apps and is rising quickly. Stay tuned!

[Update at 14:00] We’re now up from 8th to 4th in the Free Apps section. Ahead of us are “r u drunk – free”, “Tap Zoo” and “Stair Dismount Universal”. lol.

A lot of hard work has gone into something that looks and feels quite simple – a Tesco grocery shopping experience on your iPhone (all versions of iPhone, iPods and the iPad are supported). ribot have designed, built and tested the shopping application.

The result? An effective, easy-to-use shopping experience that allows you to add items to your basket quickly throughout the week. It’s fundamentally all about the concept of “little and often” shopping.

At ribot, there are lots of folk who’ve put in a lot of love into the project. It’s been a long and winding path for Rob, Mark, Jim, Paulo, Daniel, Tara, Ben, Antony & Jerome, but we’re really proud of the result!

Many thanks are also due to the equally hard-working Tesco team, which includes Annabel, Angela, Becky, Nick, Sarah, Tom, Mike, Victoria and many others that have helped along the way.

This year’s event will again host the almost-legendary mobile competition, which has featured Lastminute.com’s phone fight, and Future Platform’s Project Bluebell. The event got coverage by the BBC last year.
